August 2022, combined five CPI cities in Sumatera Utara Province 0.30 percent deflation

Abstract

In August 2022, a combination of five cities in Sumatera Utara (Sibolga, Pematangsiantar, Medan, Padangsidimpuan, and Gunungsitoli) experienced deflation of 0.30 percent with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 110.71. Of the five CPI cities in Sumatera Utara, all recorded deflation, namely Sibolga of 0.02 percent; Pematangsiantar by 0.79 percent; Medan by 0.25 percent; Padangsidimpuan by 0.31 percent; and Gunung Sitoli by 1.43 percent.

Deflation occurred due to a decrease in prices as indicated by a decrease in the price index of the expenditure group, namely the food, beverage and tobacco group by 1.48 percent; household equipment, equipment, and routine maintenance group by 0.04 percent; transportation group by 0.37 percent; information, communication, and financial services group by 0.02 percent. The groups that experienced an increase in the index were the clothing and footwear group by 1.41 percent; housing, water, electricity, and household fuel groups by 0.20 percent; health group by 0.17 percent; recreation, sports, and culture groups by 1.79 percent; education group by 0.03 percent; food and beverage/restaurant supply group by 1.27 percent; and the personal care and other services group by 0.01 percent.

The main commodities that contributed to deflation during August 2022 were shallots, cayenne pepper, red chilies, air transportation, tomatoes, perfume, and green chilies.

The inflation rate for the calendar year (January-August 2022) is 4.19 percent and the year-on-year inflation rate (August 2022 against August 2021) is 5.39 percent
